Fractured extremities can occur during the trauma of delivery or sometimes before delivery in infants with osteogenesis imperfecta. The forces of labor and delivery sometimes cause physical injury to the infant. The incidence of birth injuries from difficult or traumatic deliveries is decreasing in recent years due to the fact that more cesarean sections are performed in place of vacuum extractions, or mid- or high-forceps deliveries.

A traumatic delivery should be anticipated if the mother has small pelvic measurements, if the infant seems large for gestational age (often the case with diabetic mothers), or when there is a breech or other abnormal presentation. In such situations, labor and the fetal condition should be monitored closely by the physician.
